Project Details

Background:
Founded some 300 years ago, Sos, a village in Artsakh’s Martuni Region, is renowned as a grape-growing center. Today, it has a population of almost 1,100 and a total area of close to 5,000 acres. The main occupations of the residents are cattle breeding and viticulture. Sos is also home to an agricultural-machinery park, with modern equipment to help farmers cultivate their lands efficiently. During the Karabakh War, Sos came under heavy bombardment and much of the village was destroyed. Thirty eight residents lost their lives as a result of shelling or while fighting on the battlefield.

Armenia Fund has implemented several major development projects in Sos. It has built a potable-water network and a new kindergarten, in 2010 and 2013, respectively, with the joint support of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund’s French affiliate and the government of Artsakh; and, in 2016, finished building a new school, with the financial support of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian of Los Angeles.

Problem:
The school of Sos had sustained extensive damage as a result of shelling during the war. And although it reopened subsequently, the building remained structurally unsound and in a state of severe disrepair, necessitating the construction of a new campus. During 2014-2016, Armenia Fund built a new, state-of-the-art school, designed to accommodate up to 200 students. The new campus features spacious classrooms, a library, an infirmary, a teachers’ room, and an adjacent gym, as well as an outdoor sports field and a playground.

Solution:
Armenia Fund is building a new, state-of-the-art school, designed to accommodate up to 200 students. It will feature spacious classrooms, a library, an infirmary, and a teachers’ room. The project, made possible by the financial support of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald and Patricia Turpanjian of Los Angeles, also includes the construction of an adjacent gym as well as an outdoor sports field and playground.

Impact:
In 2017, the children of Sos started their new academic year in their brand-new school. As a facility featuring a full complement of modern amenities and comforts, the campus makes for a safe, wonderful educational environment. As such, it is playing a key role in the continued vitality of the village. Along with other development projects, this beautiful school is giving residents one more compelling reason to not migrate, and instead to take active part in the growth and prosperity of their birthplace.
