Project Details

In 2015, Armenia Fund joined forces with Adventist Health Glendale, a top medical center in Glendale, California, to organize a medical mission to the Noyemberyan Hospital, in Armenia’s northeastern Tavush Region. Noyemberyan is Armenia’s most remote borderline city, located a mere two kilometers from the border with Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Comprising a team of 45 volunteer healthcare professionals from Adventist Health, the medical mission to the Noyemberyan Hospital provided a broad range of free medical services, including surgeries, as well as medications, to hundreds of patients from throughout Tavush and many from the Lori Region. Also as part of the mission, the Noyemberyan Hospital was provided with critically needed medical equipment and supplies, as well as two ambulances, toward the ongoing goal of expanding and improving the capabilities of the Noyemberyan Hospital.

In 2016 and 2017, Armenia Fund and Adventist Health built on the success of the 2015 project with successively expanded missions, benefiting thousands of patients and continuing to enhance the hospital’s services, in terms of professional skills and equipment alike.

Lack of adequate access to healthcare remains a major problem in the Tavush and Lori regions. A considerable segment of the population cannot afford vital medical services, including surgeries; and medications and care for a range of conditions, including chronic illnesses. In addition, many types of specialized examinations and treatments are not available in Tavush and Lori, or have extremely limited availability, forcing patients to travel to Yerevan to receive care. Few residents are able to make these costly trips.

By partnering with Adventist Health Glendale and implementing annual medical missions at the Noyemberyan Hospital since 2015, Armenia Fund has made it possible for low-income patients from throughout the Tavush and Lori regions to receive high-quality healthcare and medicines. As importantly, by providing comprehensive technical support to the Noyemberyan Hospital — in the form of equipment, supplies, and trainings — the medical missions continue to improve the hospital’s services and capabilities.

The medical missions to Noyemberyan have had an immensely positive impact in three distinct senses. They have: 1) provided vital medical care and medications to a total of more than 4,600 patients from throughout Tavush and Lori; 2) created a long-term and sustainable legacy of medical excellence at the Noyemberyan Hospital by boosting its technical and professional capabilities; and 3) eased the healthcare-related economic burden of beneficiary patients.

Free medical services provided through the 2015-2017 medical missions to Noyemberyan have included ancillary-care services such as EKGs, blood-pressure and cholesterol tests, ultrasounds, X-rays, orthopedic injections, and biopsies; consultations, primary care, and specialized treatments encompassing pediatrics, neurology, pulmonology, cardiology, oncology, gynecology, orthopedics, and other fields; and surgeries encompassing all these fields as well as maxillofacial, varicose-vein, gallbladder-removal, and hernia procedures.
The 2017 medical mission went one step further by expanding gynecological care. Due to a general lack of specialized medical resources, women’s health in rural Armenia has yet to be addressed adequately. With this in mind, the 2017 medical mission provided Pap smears and breast biopsies to almost 100 women from Noyemberyan and surrounding villages, with test results made available within mere hours.
Another significant milestone for the 2017 mission was that it provided training to six graduate medical students from Yerevan. All clinical residents from Yerevan’s Mkhitar Heratsi State Medical University, the students worked alongside the American doctors and gained invaluable hands-on experience.

Finally, the medical missions to Noyemberyan have considerably boosted the Noyemberyan Hospital’s technical infrastructure and capabilities, by providing it with state-of-the-art medical and surgical equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals, in addition to two vitally needed ambulances.
