Project Details

Background:
Khashtarak is a border village in Armenia’s northeastern region of Tavush. As of 2015, the community had a population of close to 2,100. Within the framework of its Rural Development Program, Armenia Fund has implemented several infrastructure and community-development projects in the village. They include the construction of a gas pipeline, the reconstruction and furnishing of the community school, the construction of a kindergarten, the provision of agricultural machinery to farmers, and the construction of the Khashtarak-Lusahovit-Ditavan irrigation network, which has significantly boosted local agriculture by bringing water to about 600 hectares of land.

Problem:
The Khashtarak Medical Center, a three-story facility built in the 1970s, had never undergone a major renovation. Due to decades of neglect and lack of maintenance, the building was in a state of severe disrepair and no longer fit to be used as a healthcare facility. The problems included extensive water damage to the roof, walls, and ceilings, crumbling floors, broken windows, and unsanitary conditions due in part to broken plumbing and sewage systems. The building also lacked indoor restrooms and central heating.

 Solution:
Armenia Fund implemented a complete redesign and renovation of the Khashtarak Medical Center. The roof and all floors were replaced, walls and ceilings were repaired, and the entire facility was repainted. New electrical, plumbing, sewage, and water-removal systems were installed. All doors and windows were replaced and indoor restrooms were built. Armenia Fund also built a new, external water pipeline and a central-heating system featuring a standalone boiler room. Finally, the facility was provided with new furniture.

Impact:
Thanks to the reconstruction, renovation, and refurnishing project, the Khashtarak Medical Center has been transformed into a clean, comfortable, state-of-the-art facility capable of providing high-quality medical services. Today it provides care to residents of not only Khashtarak, but also the neighboring villages of Lusahovit, Aknaghbyur, and Lusadzor.
