Background:
The National Library of Armenia is the country’s main repository of printed matter and electronic publications, encompassing a vast array of material published in the homeland and the diaspora and collected ever since the library’s founding in 1832. As a major educational, cultural, and informational institution, the library collects, preserves, and provides public access to books, magazines, newspapers, maps, posters, scholarly papers, musical scores, and music records. Other materials preserved at the library include currencies, postcards, letters, and stamps. As of 2015, the library’s collection comprises over 6 million items.

Problem:
The fact that the National Library’s collection of books and other printed material was not digitized meant that it could not be electronically accessed by readers and researchers in countries throughout the world. Specifically, the lack of an online library meant that the National Library’s collection remained unavailable to public and university libraries across the globe. The National Library also needed to create an onsite e-reading hall where visitors could access digitized materials.

Solution:
Armenia Fund established a digitization center inside the National Library, complete with state-of-the-art equipment including large-format drum scanners, a server, and large-capacity external hard drives. Armenia Fund also established an e-reading hall inside the library, equipping it with a network of 15 computers with Internet access. Both the digitization center and the e-reading hall were made possible by a contribution from benefactor Hovsep Tahta of Argentina.

Impact:
Thanks to the digitization center inside the National Library, Armenia’s vast print heritage has been brought into the 21st century. Hundreds of thousands of books, magazines, and other publications have since been digitized to form the institution’s electronic library, accessible by readers and researchers anywhere in the world. As importantly, National Library visitors are now able to access its electronic library through the 15 computers installed in the e-reading hall.
