Highway Maintenance

Maintaining a Viable Link Between Armenia and Artsakh

Project Started ~ January 1, 2000

The Goris-Stepanakert Highway project, launched in 1995 and completed in 1999, led to the creation of a vital highway. This highway, which provides the only reliable ground link between Armenia and Karabakh, is necessary for the economic, social, and military development of Karabakh.

The Goris-Stepanakert Highway, which had not been repaired since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, underwent a great deal of change over the course of four years. New road turns, as well as 1.5m roadside shoulders were added to secure a more comfortable means of transport between the two regions. Furthermore, the new highway was constructed in such a manner to allow for a shorter travel time between Goris and Stepanakert.

Although the Goris-Stepanakert Highway project allowed for the creation of this important road, it is also critical to keep in mind that road maintenance plays a key role in determining how useful the highway will continue to be. In order to allow for the full use of the highway, the road must be properly maintained. Due to the harsh winter weather, road repair becomes necessary over time. Also, as a result of this weather the roads must be salted. Furthermore, in order to properly maintain the highway, it must be cleaned on a regularly basis.

As a result of the importance of the existence and maintenance of this highway, the Road Maintenance Project has been developed in order to ensure that the Goris-Stepanakert highway remains well kept. With the generous yearly contributions of Los Angeles based philanthropist and a dedicated supporter of Armenia and Artsakh Vahe Karapetian for the full maintenance of the Goris-Stepanakert Highway, Armenia Fund is able to assure that this vital highway can indeed be kept in a good condition and always meet the required standards.
