Backbone Highway

Securing a Powerful Infrastructure for the Future of Artsakh

Project Started ~ July 1, 2000
Project Completed ~ November 1, 2009

The construction of the North-South Highway in the Nagorno Karabakh Republic started in the year 2000.

Passing through the five regions of Nagorno Karabakh, it connects with the Goris-Stepanakert Highway near Stepanakert, the capital.

The highway passes through 20 towns and comes close to 100 villages stretching from Martakert to Hadrout. The 160.3 km (about 105 miles) long highway is a central component of connecting local roads into one great network.

One of the signs placed along the highway that reads:

The highway, dubbed as the Backbone of Artsakh, will further boost economic growth by connecting local farmers to markets, tourists to historical sites, children to schools, as well as ensuring the safe, proper transport of patients to hospitals and healthcare facilities. The North-South Highway is strategically important for the continued development of Artskah.

Thanks to the support of Armenia Fund and its global affiliates, 138.8km of the highway were completed successfully: the Stepanakert-Hadrout (66.3km) and the Stepanakert-Martakert portions (72.5km).

Armenia Fund has spent over $28.5 million USD in completing the highway. The Nagorno Karabakh Republic government has undertaken the completion of the remaining 21.5km of the highway, which is currently in a drivable condition.
