| The mountain where the spring is located |
Background:
Nor Gharachinar village is populated by refugees from the Shahumian region of Artsakh that is currently under the military occupation of Azerbaijani forces. It is a remote village – the distance from Stepanakert is about 120 kilometers (75 miles). The village has 18 houses and the total population is around 70 people.
The village has never had a drinking or irrigation water distribution system. As a result of the project, all households of the village have water that is being used for drinking and irrigating vegetable gardens that people rely upon for food.

Project description:
There is an abundant spring close to the top of the nearby mountain that is sufficient for providing the village with drinkig and irrigation water around the clock. In order to bring the water to the village from the source, a 690 meter-long pipe (50mm diameter) was installed in the ground.
An internal water distribution network was also installed (a total of 1,570 meters of pipes with diameters varying from 20 mm to 50 mm depending on the amount of water pressure needed) in the village bringing the water to every one of the 18 houses. 12 out of 18 houses in the village currently have a waterpipe with a faucet that controls the flow of water.
| Pipes brought to the village to install individual water faucets in people’s houses. |
A 25 cu.m. reservoir was installed halfway through the main pipeline to control the flow of water and provide for a constant water supply. An additional 250 meters of pipe along with a 5 cu.m. reservoir was installed in the lower portion of the village bringing the water to the remaining 4 houses
Projected completion:
The projet began on April 2005 and ended on July 25, 2005. The opening ceremony was attended by Armenia Fund Executive Director Sarkis Kotanjian and local regional government officials. A few kids from the village were on hand to open the main water facuet. Within minutes, the entire village pipeline network was surging with fresh spring water.
