Nork-Marash Infectious Diseases Hospital

Project Started ~ November 1, 2005
Project Completed ~ April 1, 2008

Project location: Nork-Marash, Yerevan, Armenia

Project Category: Public Health-System Development

Project Cost: 122,085,979 AMD

Donors: Fundo Armenia do Brazil (Armenia Fund Brazil affiliate), Embassy of Brazil in Armenia

Project Description:

Yerevan’s Nork-Marash Infectious Diseases Hospital is the only medical institution in Armenia specializing in the treatment of infectious diseases.

Established in 1956, the 46,000 sq ft hospital consists of two main structures (with two and four stories, respectively) and offers the full complement of diagnostic and treatment facilities, including an intensive-care unit, a pediatric department, a laboratory, and a rehabilitation department.

Due to years of neglect and lack of proper maintenance, by the mid-2000s Nork-Marash had fallen well below healthcare standards, in terms of proper sanitation and sterilization, resulting in a hazardous environment for staff and critically-ill patients alike.

To address the problem, the Armenia Fund, with the financial support of the Armenian community of Brazil and the Armenia Fund’s affiliate in Brazil, launched a major renovation project in 2005.

During 2005-2007, the hospital’s ICU and pediatric departments, located in the main building, were renovated. Subsequently, the embassy of Brazil in Armenia and the Armenia Fund, with the support of the Armenian community of Brazil, funded the construction of a boiler house for the two-story building, thus providing it with a central heating system.

Finally, by April 2008, the renovation of the third and fourth floors of the four-story building and its roof, as well as the construction of a boiler to support heating at the hospital, were completed.
