Project Description:
The village of Meghradzor (population: 2,800) is located in the Kotayk Region of central Armenia..
For years following Armenia’s independence, Meghradzor grappled with a drinking-water crisis. Its water pipeline, which brought water from two springs in nearby mountains (9 km and 14 km away, respectively), was constructed in 1968 and required major repairs. The second spring lacked a purification facility, resulting in low-quality water. Furthermore, the reservoir which collected water from both springs was not constructed properly, as a result of which rain water seeped into the system. Combined, these problems led to unsanitary conditions, increasing the threat of water-borne epidemics.
Meghradzor’s water woes did not end there. The crumbling and outdated pipeline did not bring in enough water for the population, and the village’s water-distribution network also required major repairs – although the Meghradzor Municipality began to address the latter issue beginning in the mid-2000s.
Given the situation, the residents of Meghradzor were forced to either buy bottled water or carry water daily from other springs in the area.
In order to end Meghradzor’s chronic water shortage, a major infrastructure-development project was implemented in 2007, with the financial support of Fonds Armenien de France, the Armenia Fund’s affiliate in France.
Through the project, a new, 14.5 km pipeline, with a diameter of 150 mm, was constructed; a water-purification station was built next to the farthest spring; and the Meghradzor water reservoir was reconstructed.
As a result of these improvements, Meghradzor is now supplied with an adequate amount of clean, safe drinking water.
