Project Description:
The village of Madaghis, located in Artsakh’s Martakert Province, was occupied several times and almost completely destroyed during the war. In addition to the human toll, many of the village’s public structures, including schools, lay in ruins. While the village recovered to some extent in the years following the war, abject poverty prevented it from fully rehabilitating its educational institutions. As a result, preschool education was hit particularly hard.
Madaghis reached a turning point in 2006, when reconstruction efforts were boosted by the establishment of a modern school in the village, with the financial support of Hayastan Foundation Canada. With the opening of the new school, the old school building was transferred to the community’s kindergarten. However, the mere availability of the building did not solve the issue, as the dilapidated structure required major repairs to become operational.
Through the Madaghis kindergarten-reconstruction project, financed by the Armenia Fund’s affiliate in Lebanon, the building underwent thorough renovation in 2007 and 2008: the roof was reconstructed; doors and windows were replaced; the floors were repaired and resurfaced; and the staircases were refurbished. In addition, all interior spaces were painted and decorated, and the exterior spaces of the site were landscaped. Finally, the school was provided with new furniture.
