Project Title: Construction of New School in Verin Horatagh
Project Category: Restoration of Educational Facilities
Project Cost: 237,000 USD
Donor: Armenia Fund Canada (Toronto)
Project Description:
The village of Verin Horatagh (population: 650) is located in Artsakh’s Martakert Province. Like the rest of Martakert – the site of fierce battles during the war – Verin Horatagh emerged from the conflict with heavy losses, in terms of casualties, property destruction, and infrastructure damage.
Today, as Verin Horatagh continues to recover, its top priorities are ensuring the education of the young generation and creating conditions for the growth and future prosperity of the community.
Intent on significantly contributing to Verin Horatagh’s recovery efforts, the Armenia Fund’s affiliate in Canada financed the construction of a new school building in the community, to replace the old, half-ruined village school, which was built in the 1930s.
Construction of the new, three-story campus was completed in 2007. The school, which bears the name of British humanitarian and Artsakh advocate Baroness Caroline Cox, opened in 2008.
