New metal doors were installed at the central entrance
Armenia Fund, Inc. adopted Etchmiadzin Secondary School #5 reconstruction project in January of 2005 through a generous donation of Mr. and Mrs. Berj and Belet Shahbazian of Los Angeles, California.
The four-wing school was initially constructed in 1970 for 970 students. However, the number of students has decreased through the years. Currently the school houses 380 students in grades 1 through 11.
Old wooden floors were replaced with new linoleum flooring
The team of construction experts, local School Board members and Armenia Fund representatives in consultation with the Shahbazian family decided that given the current number of students, the two wings out of four are not needed. The remaining two wings that were slated for major repair are the main wing and the wing that houses the gymnasium and the auditorium.
Thus, the project was broken up into two stages: the first stage targets the main building and the second - the gymnasium, auditorium and the boiler house.
The first stage has been completed in May of 2005.
The total cost of the first stage was $167,040.00.
The scope of work for the first stage included:
- removal of old asbestos roofing and replacement with metal roofing
- repair of the water and sewerage system
- repair of electric wiring
- installation of a drinking water tank and a pump under the roof
- replacement of all interior doors
- repair of existing windows and installation of several new
- complete renovation of six restrooms
- replacement of the flooring
- complete repair of all the walls and ceiling
- plastering and painting of all interior surfaces
- installation of new metal doors at the central entrance
Restrooms were completely refurbished and connected to proper sewage systems
The second stage is slated to begin soon. The total cost of the second stage will cost $138,000. It includes the overall repair of the auditorium, the gymnasium and the construction of a new boiler house.
In the auditorium and the gymnasium all flooring, windows and doors will be replaced, asbestos roofing will be replaced with metal and fire proofed insulation, electric wiring will be repaired, all windows will be replaced, and water supply and sewage systems will be refurbished, in order to meet environmental and health standards. The boiler house will be built, a new boiler will be installed, a new gas main laid, as well as a new heating system will be installed with heaters in every room of the school.
