Investing in the Future Generations of Artsakh

Project Started ~ November 1, 2003
Project Completed ~ December 31, 1969

Ashot Bekor School in Stepanakert

Armenia Fund, Inc. adopted Stepanakert's Ashot Bekor School reconstruction in November of 2003 during the visit of the First Lady of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, Inna Ghoukasian to California. Since then the Armenian communities of U.S. Western Rgion have been able to raise more than $160,000 through a number of undraising events hosted by such dedicated friends of Armenia Fund as Savey Tufenkian, Vahe Karapetian and Janet Mirzayan. Our special "thanks" goes to Melanie Ookhtens Memorial Fund which donated $15,000 towards the reconstruction of the school.

The school is named in honor of Artsakh Liberation War Hero Ashot Ghulian, also known as Ashot Bekor. During the war the building of the school housed the eadquarters of the NKR Defense Army and thus was targeted by the enemy air force. The school has been bombed several times and was partially destroyed.

Being one of the biggest schools in Nagorno Karabakh, before the war the three-story building housed 1,200 students.

school year

The school is in the final phase of major reconstruction. Through generous donations of dozens of dedicated donors the walls of the school have been reinforced, new roof, new floors and a centralized heating system has been installed, the electric wiring, gas, water and sewage piping has been replaced, restrooms have been remodeled, the gymnasium has been renovated, new desks, chairs, chalkboards and other furnishings essential to creating an effective educational environment have been purchased.

The total renovation cost for the Bekor School is estimated at $245,500.
